Modernizing Commercial Truck Buying & Rentals

Designing a streamlined marketplace for purchasing and renting commercial trucks.

BoxTrucks is a web-based marketplace built to simplify how businesses and independent operators discover, compare, and transact commercial trucks for purchase or rental. The platform serves a fragmented, offline-heavy industry by bringing transparency, structure, and trust to a traditionally manual process. This project focused on designing a scalable marketplace experience that reduces friction across search, evaluation, and inquiry while supporting multiple business models (sales, rentals, and vendor listings).

The Problem

Commercial truck buyers and operators rely on fragmented marketplaces, offline brokers, and inconsistent listings to make high-stakes purchasing decisions.

As a result, discovering, evaluating, and securing the right truck is slow, opaque, and error-prone, particularly for small operators without deep industry expertise.

These purchases represent significant financial commitments, yet buyers often lack the transparency and tooling needed to make confident, informed decisions.

Goal

  • Simplify discovery and comparison of commercial trucks

  • Reduce friction from search to inquiry

  • Support both buying and rental workflows

  • Design scalable patterns for listings, filters, and vendors

  • Create a foundation for future monetization and growth

Approach

Given the high cost and operational impact of these decisions, the focus was on reducing uncertainty and building trust at every step of the flow. I led product design end-to-end, partnering closely with engineering and business stakeholders to define the marketplace structure and user experience.

The approach focused on:

  • Mapping buyer and renter journeys to understand decision drivers

  • Defining a clear information hierarchy for listings and results

  • Designing flexible filtering and comparison tools to support intent-driven discovery

  • Balancing speed and clarity for high-consideration purchases

  • Creating scalable design patterns that support future categories and vendors

Given the complexity of commercial purchasing, the focus was on reducing uncertainty at each step.

Solution

The BoxTrucks platform centers around clarity, trust, and efficiency. The entire experience was designed around a clear path from discovery to inquiry, minimizing friction while preserving confidence for high-value purchases.

Key features include:

  • Structured listings with standardized specs, pricing, and availability

  • Intent-driven search and filters (truck type, size, location, use case)

  • Clear separation between buy and rent workflows

  • Vendor profiles to establish credibility and transparency

  • Streamlined inquiry flows to move users from evaluation to action

The result is a marketplace experience that supports confident decision-making without overwhelming users.

Key Design Decisions

Scan-first search and results
Listings prioritize the most important attributes upfront, enabling quick comparison across trucks.

Intent-based filtering
Filters are designed around how users think about trucks (use case, capacity, availability), not internal data models.

Clear separation of buying vs renting
Distinct flows reduce confusion and help users quickly orient around pricing, timelines, and expectations.

Scalable listing architecture
Components and layouts were designed to support future inventory types, vendors, and monetization models without rework.

Visual Identity + Design System Foundations:

Since BoxTrucks was built from the ground up, I also defined the brand and visual system to support trust, clarity, and scalability across the product.

The visual identity was designed to feel modern and dependable, balancing approachability for small operators with credibility for larger commercial buyers. Design components were created with reuse in mind, allowing the brand to scale across listings, vendors, and future product surfaces.

Impact

Established a clear, trust-driven flow for purchasing and renting commercial trucks
  • Reduced friction in discovery and evaluation for high-consideration purchases

  • Created a scalable foundation for supply onboarding and marketplace growth

  • Aligned product, brand, and UX into a cohesive marketplace experience

This work established the core patterns for how BoxTrucks approaches marketplace trust, supply quality, and growth.
